Howard Stringer, CEO (Sony) confirmed an ongoing rumor about Apple’s next gen iphone i.e iphone 5 to have Sony’s 8 Mega Pixel camera with image sensor. This was confirmed during an on-Stage event at Carnegie Hall with Walt Mossberg,
The irony in supplying cameras to Apple was quite visible in Stringer’s voice when he made the following comment
“It always puzzles me, Why would I make Apple the best camera?”
Stringer also informed that because of the nuclear/natural disaster that struck japan last month, The production of sensors at Sandai plant has been delayed and this possibly can be the reason behind the delay in launch of iphone 5.
Earlier omnivision was the major provider of image sensors to Apple but because of lack of quality image in previous models of iphone and also because of huge demand which is expected for iphone 5, Apple have decided to move on with Sony this time. Sony has a pretty good record in terms of phone cameras and it also makes 8MP image sensors for Smartphones such as Sony Ericsson Xperia NEO. The new Exmor R, sensor used in Xperia Arc features improved technology for low light situations which will be used by Apple for its new Smartphone, iphone 5.
